The "Sun Lion" was the commemorative piece marking Kalevala Koru’s 60th anniversary. The design is based on a round reliquary attached to the chain assembly of a silver cross pendant; the reliquary’s precious contents are guarded by a lion depicted on the lid, its thick mane spreading out like the golden rays of the sun. The cross pendant is part of an early medieval silver hoard discovered in 1887 in Joensuu, Halikko, where it had been hidden in the ground and was unearthed during spring ploughing.
The hook behind the tie bar’s crossbar is inserted into the shirt’s buttonhole, and the tie is passed through the space between the crossbar and the chain so that the chain and its pendant rest on top of the tie, while the crossbar remains hidden underneath it. – kalevala.fi
