"Longitudinal trees are both history and today. Before roads
the networks began to cross in Lapland's boreholes, the longwoods were important
part on forest paths and routes between villages. Because Lapland is widely
in the swampy terrain, the means of transport had to be forcibly led over the banks as well.
The old extension trees could be simple, with supports placed next to each other
lines made of pine logs across the swamp area. Such simple ones
ways were made, for example, on the routes leading to Jänkäniitti.
At times, more effort had been seen, especially with a lot of used ones
on the routes between the villages and made through sawn honga cross-trees
pleasant wooden path on top. They were responsible for the maintenance of the long trees,
who needed a route and often enough to fix it was the swamp water
a suitable tree trunk was thrown over the rotten spot.
Today, the forest board is largely responsible for the long trees on the tourist routes.
Today, unfortunately, wooden extension trees are often replaced
with bridges made of brushed steel. The ones that rumble under these steps
the advantage of substitutes is that they do not rot. Another phenomenon is that
the routes are made of ash stone as some kind of road. Either solution is
practical, but they do not please the tradition-loving hiker.
In the picture, the pine trees disappear into the fog and go somewhere, just like a person
even life." Photographer Kauno Kaulanen.
